SMP vs hair transplant: which is right for you?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) and hair transplants solve different problems. A transplant moves real hair; SMP creates the look of a close-cut head of hair with pigment. Which suits you depends on your hair loss, your budget and the look you want.
The quick comparison
| SMP | Hair transplant | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Cosmetic tattooing that recreates the look of hair follicles | Surgery that moves hair follicles from the back of the head |
| The look | A freshly shaved or buzzed head, or added density under longer hair | Real hair you can grow and style |
| Surgery | None | Yes, under local anaesthetic |
| Recovery | A few days of redness | Usually longer, with a period of shedding before new growth |
| Typical UK cost | About £1,000–£3,000 for a full scalp | Often several thousand pounds or more |
| Needs donor hair? | No | Yes |
| Upkeep | Top-ups every few years; keep hair short for the shaved look | Ongoing hair loss may need further treatment |
When SMP makes more sense
- You're happy with a short, sharp shaved look.
- Your hair loss is advanced, or you don't have enough donor hair for a transplant.
- You don't want surgery or a long recovery.
- You want to hide scars from a previous transplant.
When a transplant makes more sense
- You want hair you can grow long and style.
- You have good donor hair and a surgeon has said you're a suitable candidate.
Using both
Many people combine them. SMP can add density behind transplanted hair so the scalp shows through less, and it can camouflage the scars that transplants leave behind.
The honest answer
Neither is right for everyone. At a Blackline consultation we'll tell you whether SMP will give you the look you want, and if it won't, we'll say so.
