SMP for thinning hair: what density treatment can and can't do

SMP isn't only for shaved heads. Density treatment places pigment between the hairs you already have, so less scalp shows through and your hair looks thicker. Here's what it can do, what it can't, and who it suits.

How it works

Tiny dots of pigment are placed in the thinning areas, between your existing hairs. They act like shadows, reducing the contrast between your hair and your scalp. You keep your hair at whatever length you like.

Who it suits

  • Men and women with thinning hair who want to keep some length
  • Thinning at the crown or along a parting
  • People using hair loss treatments who want the look of extra density alongside them
  • Anyone tired of hair fibres or concealers

What it can't do

  • It doesn't grow hair or stop hair loss. If your hair is still thinning, the treated area may need adjusting over time.
  • It can't add length or volume. It reduces how much scalp shows through.
  • It works best where there's still some hair to blend with.

Check the cause first

If your hair loss is sudden, patchy or comes with other symptoms, see your GP before thinking about any cosmetic treatment. Some causes of hair loss can be treated.

What to expect

Density treatment usually takes two or three sessions, a week or two apart. Because it sits under your hair, the result is subtle by design. Most people simply notice that your hair looks fuller.
