How to choose an SMP artist: 9 questions to ask

SMP is designed to last for years, so who does it matters more than almost anything else. These are the questions worth asking at any consultation, including ours.

1. Can I see healed results?

Fresh SMP always looks crisp. What matters is how it looks once it has healed, weeks or months later. Ask to see healed photos of real clients, ideally in natural light and from more than one angle.

2. Are you trained and insured for SMP?

SMP needs its own training and insurance cover, separate from general tattooing or beauty work. Ask where they trained and whether their insurance names scalp micropigmentation.

3. Are you and your premises registered?

In most parts of England, people who do cosmetic tattooing, and the premises they work in, must be registered with the local council. It's a basic check worth making.

4. What pigment and needles do you use?

Look for pigment made specifically for SMP rather than standard tattoo ink, and sterile, single-use needles opened in front of you.

5. How will you design my hairline?

A good artist draws your hairline on and agrees it with you in the mirror before any pigment goes in, and designs it around your face shape and age.

6. How many sessions will I need, and why?

Most full treatments take around three sessions. Building density in layers is what makes SMP look natural, so be wary of anyone who promises it all in one go.

7. What does the price include?

Check whether the quote covers every session, the consultation and a review once you've healed, and what top-ups cost later.

8. What happens if I'm not happy?

Ask how they handle corrections, and whether they'll review your result once it has healed.

9. Will you tell me if SMP isn't right for me?

SMP suits most kinds of hair loss, but not everyone. A good artist will tell you when it isn't the right choice.

Red flags

  • No healed results to show, or only photos taken straight after treatment
  • A price that seems too good to be true, or pressure to pay in full on the day
  • No consultation or medical questions before treatment
  • A promise of a full result in a single session
